Forbes Article: Digital Storage Projections For 2019, Part 2

By January 3, 2019May 12th, 2021No Comments

This is the second in our three-part 2019 digital storage projection blog series. This part looks at 2018 trends and future developments in solid state storage, memory and fundamental computer architectures. In particular we will look for developments in fast storage interfaces, in particular NVMe and fabrics built with NVMe (NVMe-oF). This piece will also look at trends in emerging non-volatile memories and their use in new computing architectures such as computational storage and in-memory computing. Finally we will look at the trends driving high performance solid state memory in IoT and data center environments.
There are several other companies who are introducing computational storage devices. SNIA started a Computational Storage Technical Working Group in the Fall of 2018 this is part of the Solid State Storage Initiative (SSSI). Members include ARM, Eideticom, Inspur, Lenovo, Micron Technology, NetApp, NGD Systems, Nyriad, Samsung Electronics, ScaleFlux, SK hynix, Western Digital Corporation, and Xilinx.
RISC-V is a free and open computer standard with roots back to the 1980’s. The RISC-V foundation was founded in 2015 and has more than 100 member organizations collaborating on software and hardware innovations that the foundation believes will pave the way for the next 50 years of computing design and innovation. Proponents of RISC-V say that it that enables the diversity of Big Data and Fast Data applications and workloads proliferating in core data centers and in remote and mobile systems at the edge. It provides an alternative to current, standard, general purpose compute architectures. Companies such as Western Digital are planning to use RISC-V cores in storage devices to provide a very flexible open application architecture for computational storage.
