Microchip has launched the design-conscious telemetry controller LX7730, which uses advanced mixed-scale mixed signal integration to combine functions such as multiplexers, amplifiers, filters, A / D converters and D / A, being designed to operate as a companion chip for an FPGA host. Protected in a 132-pin quad flat, the device qualifies QML for Class Q and Class V requirements.
We can now go even further, benefiting from the benefits of the latest ISA RISC-V architectures that allow a FPGA companion with a soft processor (CPU) to make local, inexpensive, processing at the telemetry source.
A combination of an FPGA and a telemetry controller can be economically deployed in every payload to achieve data logging, monitoring of the operating status and self-loading of tasks and to send a simple update of the state of operation to the central computer of satellite, using a command line protocol such as MIL-STD-1553, SpaceWire, CAN bus or a patented protocol. This saves the use of the main processor of the satellite to make other tasks available.
A new Six Sensor Demo brings all the elements together to show how LEO satellites can manage telemetry much more efficiently by combining the LX7730 telemetry controller with a radiation-resistant RTG4 FPGA that contains a processor core RISC-V software. The two devices work together to capture data from a sensor network and display the measured values on a laptop screen through a GUI interface.
