According to Google, open source hardware is the future. An ecosystem in which chip designs are developed openly has many advantages. In theory, transparency leads to more security, but according to Google, can also provide more flexibility. The internet giant is aiming for a future in which chips are developed according to a certain open source baseline. Manufacturers can then adjust such chips and implement them as desired, while basic compatibility remains guaranteed.
Google initially puts its shoulders under the lowRISC platform. This is an open source chip platform that has been around for some time. Google has supported lowRISC from the start and is now increasing that support. Google is sending two people to the lowRISC board. An example of the collaboration is the ‘Ibex’ RISC-V core, which Google developed together with lowRISC and ETH Zurich.
