One of the most discussed topics in the semiconductor industry today is the RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). Many conferences and specialist articles discuss RISC-V. Although the RISC-V architecture is still under development, it may initiate a revolutionary change in the intellectual property (IP) and semiconductor industries. It is defined by the RISC-V Foundation as a “free and open ISA that enables a new era of processor innovation through open standard collaboration.” As a result, it challenges established processor families directly. Anyone can design RISC-V processor cores or integrate them into system-on-chip (SoC) designs. The Foundation supports, standardizes, and develops the RISC-V-ISA.
