Some 2,000 computer and semiconductor specialists gathered at a conference in San Jose, California, last December. The colorful mix of academics, start-ups and specialists from major tech companies such as Google, Samsung and Qualcomm hoped to learn more about the latest developments in RISC-V, a technology that some believe could revolutionize the design of new, better and cheaper computer chips.
