Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s cloud arm launched a new chip development platform called Wujian 600 on Wednesday. The platform was created for developers to design system-on-chips (SoCs) used for AI computation. The system focuses on RISC-V, a major open-source instruction set architecture that Chinese semiconductor firms have kept a close eye on. The first prototype chip developed on the platform was from Alibaba’s semiconductor team, T-Head; their chip, the TH1520, has since been used for business by Alibaba itself, according to the firm. Launched in 2009, Alibaba Cloud became the third-largest infrastructure as a service (IaaS) provider worldwide in 2018, according to IDC. [Alibaba Cloud]
