Alibaba’s T-Head chip unit demonstrates Android compatibility on RISC-V chips | TechNode

T-Head, the chip unit of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, demonstrated Android compatibility on its RISC-V chips on Wednesday at its RISC-V Summit 2022 event. Running natively on T-Head’s prototype chipset TH1520, the open-source version of Android 12 managed to perform media playback, 3D rendering, and AI recognition. The demo represents major progress both for Alibaba and for its RISC-V architecture, which will be the base for further work on application compatibility at T-Head. “To better complement the ecological weaknesses of the integration of the two systems, T-Head will focus on promoting the solutions of fundamental issues like testing, performance optimization and open source collaboration,” said Mao Han, president of the RISC-V Android Special Interest Group and a Linux OS engineer at T-Head. Launched in 2018, the Alibaba-owned firm focuses on AI chips and CPU Processor IP, covering end-to-end chip design processes, according to their official website.
