RISC-V Celebrates Momentum of 2022 and Accelerating Adoption in 2023

By January 11, 2023No Comments

Welcome to 2023! I’m so excited for the possibilities of the new year for the RISC-V ecosystem. Ten billion RISC-V cores have been shipped, and we are just getting started. Together, we will do great things this year, building on the amazing accomplishments of 2022, capped off with the RISC-V Summit in December.

2022 was the year Android came to RISC-V, NASA selected Microchip and SiFive to power its next High Performance Spaceflight Computing (HSPC) processor, and RISC-V adoption accelerated across a wide variety of markets from IoT to Data Center… and there was so much more to share and celebrate.

Thank you for your passion, dedication, and contribution to an incredible year, we are looking forward to an even bigger 2023! Here’s a 2022 recap.

RISC-V Summit

RISC-V Summit welcomed attendees from around the world, offering a rich program of 95 sessions including keynotes, technical breakouts, panels, tutorials, and an expo hall featuring a range of member companies and organizations.

Keynote highlights included RISC-V Board Chair, Krste Asanović, discussing why RISC-V is inevitable, Manju Varma, sharing Qualcomm has already shipped 650 million RISC-V cores to date, and Google’s Lars Bergstrom detailing the status of RISC-V support for the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), an operating system with over 3 billion users worldwide. Lip-Bu Tan articulated the deep strategic and investment value the industry is placing on RISC-V, while Pete Fiacco discussed Space-based computing on RISC-V and the HSPC SoC which is showing 1000x speedup for vector operations vs current technology used in space. These are just a few of the game-changing keynotes shared at Summit, with several more from our community.

In the lead-up to, and during RISC-V Summit, members made over 20 exciting announcements around RISC-V hardware and software solutions in areas such as AI, safety, security, and software development across applications from IoT to Automotive to Data Center.

Specifications and Extensions

The RISC-V community made strong technical progress in 2022. RISC-V Profiles RVI20, RVA20 and RVA22 just completed public review and will be voted upon for ratification in Q1 2023.  Progress on specifications and extensions has also been strong, with six ratified this year and 10 more expected in the next 120 days, including the Crypto vector extension.

Collaboration of RISC-V members across the 81 technical groups made our progress possible, with high levels of engagement resulting in 30 groups being added in 2022, accelerating a range of areas including Automotive, Operating Systems, Performance Modelling, and Security. At RISC-V Summit, we honored 25 outstanding technical and community leaders from 2022.

RISC-V is inevitable. Come and add your technical expertise in 2023 as we continue to build RISC-V extensions, the most complete software ecosystem, and expand adoption in verticals such as data center and mobile. Pick from any of the 80+ technical and business groups aligned with your interests.

Learning and Development

The RISC-V Foundational Associate (RFVA) certification launched at Summit, joining 14 other online courses around RISC-V. RVFA certification is aimed at those seeking entry-level RISC-V roles or transitioning from another architecture. The certification is ideal for those pursuing a career in roles such as embedded systems engineer, RTL design engineer, design verification engineer, software developer, or documentation engineer.

RISC-V at Embedded World

Join us in Germany for RISC-V at Embedded World in March 2023!

Embedded World 2023 (March 14-16) is the next big event in the RISC-V calendar. Over 25 RISC-V members have a presence at the show, with 14 talks on the program from the RISC-V ecosystem. Last year, the show attracted around 18,000 attendees from 76 countries.

RISC-V pavilion will feature exhibits from members across the ecosystem and talks in our Demo Theatre. It is not too late to secure a place on the RISC-V pavilion, where you’ll benefit from the foot traffic streaming in to see the latest on RISC-V, the press and analysts that come by for the latest news, and an opportunity to invite your customers and partners to meet with you. Those who already have space on the show floor can book extra benefits to augment their presence in the RISC-V pavilion. I look forward to seeing you at the show!

Thank you for bringing your passion, talents, and commitment to RISC-V in 2022. We’ve accelerated industry adoption of open collaboration at the heart of open computing and together we’re changing the course of history. The future runs on RISC-V. I can’t wait to engage with you in 2023!
