The Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) is part of the Brazilian public-funded higher education system. FURG comprises thirteen departments offering the facilities to more than 10,000 people to conduct PhD-level research and undergrad studies. The research programme focuses on challenges that arise from the local communities and coastal ecosystems including projects in the fields of sensor design, embedded artificial intelligence, underwater robotics, autonomous ships and wearable devices. FURG is located close to “Praia do Cassino”, the southernmost beach of Brazil’s coastline, which is also considered the longest sandy seashore in the world (226 Km).
