국내 반도체 업계에서도 ‘RISC-V’가 빠르게 확산되고 있습니다. 삼성전자가 RISC-V 기반의 5G 통신 모뎀과 이미지센서 상용화를 공식화한 데 이어, LG전자도 신경망처리장치(NPU) 개발에 RISC-V를 활용하고 있습니다. 이들 대기업 외에도 IP, 팹리스, 디자인하우스 등 반도체 설계 전문 기업들도 RISC-V 진영에 뛰어들었습니다.PC시대에는 인텔x86, 모바일 시대에는 ARM이 지배자였지만 IoT, 로봇, 머신러닝 등의 미래 분야에서는 난관에 부딪히고 있습니다. 폐쇄적인 아키텍처, 막대한 라이선스 비용, 장기간의 제품 개발 주기로 생산성이 낮아지고 있기 때문입니다. 이에 반도체의 리눅스로 불리우는 RISC-V가 새로운 대안으로 등장하였고 많은 기업들이 RISC-V를 활용하기 시작하였습니다.
개방과 공유를 지향하는 RISC-V는 아키텍처를 무료로 공개하고 누구나 쉽게 수정하여 설계에 활용할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 마치 초창기의 아이폰 앱스토어처럼 자발적이고 강력한 생태계가 구성되어 빠르게 확산되고 있습니다. 이제 반도체의 미래는 어떻게 될까요? 폐쇄적이고 무겁고 값비싼 기술과 공개적이고 가볍고 저렴한 기술간의 경쟁에서 누가 승자가 될까요?

“New Hope of System Semiconductor”
‘RISC-V’ is rapidly spreading in the domestic semiconductor industry. Following the official commercialization of 5G communication modems and image sensors based on RISC-V by Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics is also using RISC-V to develop neural network processing units (NPUs). In addition to these conglomerates, companies specializing in semiconductor design such as IP, fabless, and design houses also entered the RISC-V camp.In the PC era, Intel x86 and in the mobile era were dominated by ARM, but future fields such as IoT, robots, and machine learning are facing challenges. Closed architectures, enormous licensing costs, and long product development cycles are reducing productivity. Accordingly, RISC-V, called Linux of semiconductors, appeared as a new alternative, and many companies began to use RISC-V.
RISC-V, which aims for openness and sharing, is free to open its architecture and anyone can easily modify it and use it for design, as well as a voluntary and powerful ecosystem like the early iPhone App Store, which is rapidly spreading. What is the future of semiconductors now? Who will win the competition between closed, heavy and expensive technology and open, light and inexpensive technology?
Through the’New Hope of System Semiconductor-Korea Risk Five (RISC-V) Summit 2020′, E-Newspaper Internet intends to share various technologies, applications, and cases about RISC-V and prepare a heated discussion forum for future prospects.
