PC Watch Article: MIT Creates 16-bit RISC-V Processor With Carbon Nanotube Semiconductor

MIT researchers used carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) and a RISC-V microprocessor to create a brand new 16-bit processor. This 16-bit RISC-V processor incorporates more than 14,000 CNFETs, and in the demonstration, it correctly executed the full set of instructions and completed the same tasks as a commercial microprocessor. MIT developed a CNFET microprocessor six years ago, but only 178 CNFETs could transfer single-bit data. Fabrication of CNFET using carbon nanotube was necessary to address three issues: material, manufacturing defects, and malfunction.
