Western Digital was asked to estimate which trends are likely to affect the storage world in the coming year. Chief Technology Officer Martin Fink took a look into the future for storage insiders.
Undoubtedly, in the forecasts of the manufacturers, the technical direction pursued by their own company also plays a part. This is also reflected in the developments that Western Digital sees as promising in 2019. From the manufacturer’s point of view, these are the most important fast-moving trends:
The demand for RISC-V chips is increasing.
The further the Internet of Things (IoT) grows, the more longevity and life cycle of “networked things” become critical. Finally, the workload and associated processing requirements are constantly changing. Against this background, the demand for RISC-V semiconductor devices will increase. This is supported by organizations that tailor IoT embedded devices to a specific work process. At the same time, you want to reduce the costs and security risks associated with using chips that are not based on open-source instruction sets.
