RISC-V Newsletter – March 2, 2023

RISC-V Momentum

We’re off to an incredible start in 2023! We have already ratified several extensions and are on course to complete six ratifications in the first quarter including Profiles. We’ve also initiated planning for RISC-V Summits in Europe (Barcelona, June 5-9), China (August), and the US (Santa Clara, November), as well as numerous events happening around the world in partnership with our community. We’re continuing to see tremendous momentum with companies moving through the architecture compatibility process, hosting technical sessions for deeper dives on RISC-V, signing up for RISC-V learning and certification, signing up for mentorships, and engaging across our technical, marketing, and academic groups.

In 2023, we have several priorities underway to ensure industry adoption of RISC-V compatible implementations, promote collaboration, drive specification development progress, and ultimately ratify extensions. In marketing, our goal is to increase visibility of the incredible progress of RISC-V across the industry through amplification, media engagement, press, and our online center of gravity. You’ll see many of these elements reflected in our newsletters going forward.

I invite you to engage deeply – the era of open computing is well underway and begins with the RISC-V community.

RISC-V Technical Updates

Profiles are Our Highest Priority

Great work is being done by dozens of technical working groups. Currently, Profiles are viewed as the highest priority. Profiles for RVI20, RVA20, and RVA22 are expected to be ratified in Q1. We expect RVA23, which includes Crypto Vector and Android™, to be ratified by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the next RVA profile is expected to be defined by the beginning of Q4.

We are targeting six ratifications in Q1 and 13 additional ratifications in Q2. Our Q1 and Q2 specification freeze and ratification milestones should help us complete specifications started in 2022 and earlier. We have successfully employed a divide-and-conquer strategy with many of our specifications being smaller or fast-tracked to enable members to implement necessary extensions more quickly. As part of this streamlining, in the February board meeting, the Board has approved moving to a 30-day (down from 45-day) public review period to allow for diligence while accelerating ratifications. Check out the specification status.

RISC-V Community

Submit Your Summer Mentorship Proposal Now

Students and young professionals have emerged as one of the fastest-growing and most passionate segments of the community. As part of RISC-V’s efforts to support and foster this important part of our community, we launched the RISC-V Mentorship Program.

In 2022, the RISC-V Mentorship Program matched 11 mentors with 15 mentees to work on projects around the globe, helping to fast-track careers, growth, and engagement in the ecosystem. RISC-V organizational members are welcome to submit a mentorship project proposal for consideration. Submit a project and apply to be a mentor by March 13.

There are many additional areas to engage in our community building efforts:

Marketing Update

You’ve heard it by now:

  • RISC-V is inevitable
  • RISC-V enables the best processors
  • RISC-V is rapidly building the strongest ecosystem

How is the RISC-V community sharing the RISC-V story? Our goal this year is to make it as easy as possible for our members to evangelize RISC-V and do it in a consistent way. Together, we want to amplify RISC-V momentum, to showcase and ignite adoption and collaboration. We look to do this with compelling content, events and campaigns.

Our 2023 priorities include focusing on better communications with our community, branding and messaging around Profiles and Platforms, modernizing and Exchange, hosting three global RISC-V Summits (Europe, China, and North America) as well as providing assets members can use in sharing information on RISC-V.

Track progress and get involved. Join the RISC-V Marketing Committee.
